Useful Tricks on How to Write an Essay about Your Goals

An essay about your future goals may seem stressful, but there are steps you can take before beginning the first draft that will help your ideas flow coherently.

  • Brainstorm Your Goals
  • What do you want to do during your lifetime? For some, that question is simple, as they have known what they wanted to accomplish from an early age. For others, there are so many possibilities that it is hard to narrow them down to just a few. Make a list of the things you think you would like to accomplish. Then, go back over that list and eliminate the “maybe someday” ideas, leaving only the ones that you know you want to try.

  • Create a Timeline
  • Now that you have your list, you need to think about the time frame your essay will cover. Are these your goals for the next few months, five years, or during your lifetime? Ask yourself how long it will take you to accomplish even the simplest of your goals. Once you have enough goals to develop the body paragraphs for the time frame you want to cover in your writing, it is time move on to the next step.

  • Research Roads to Your Goals
  • What do you have to do to in order to accomplish your goals? If you have not started to do so already, research the requirements for making each goal a reality. Will you need to go to school, or get a license? Do you need special training or travel documents? Take time to explore your goals, and make notes on how you plan to complete each step on your road to accomplishment.

  • Write Down the Recipe
  • The same way a cookbook recipe starts with a list of ingredients, starting with the goal, write down ideas about why you want to accomplish these goals, what emotions you think you will experience as you set out on your journey towards each of your goals, and how you think the experience might change you as you go along. This will help your readers connect to your feelings about your goals.

Remember these tricks before you start writing:

  • Brainstorm your goals
  • Create a timeline
  • Research roads to your goals
  • Write down the recipe
  •

By using these tricks before starting your essay, you will create a sharper focus for your essay. A stronger focus helps your readers understand what you want to accomplish and why.
